On obedience.

by Jordan Bakker on May 12, 2017

The obedience that God calls for is all inclusive. It has to do with all that He commands, and pertains to our actions, thoughts, desires, and intentions. It has to with what we avoid (put to death what is earthly in you - Col. 3:5) and what we do (Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances - 1 Thess. 5:17-18). Obedience comes out of our desire to glorify God and is bound by our willingness to submit ourselves to God and His entire Word. Ignorance is not bliss, and obedience to God's Word is not cafeteria style, where we pick and choose whatever we think is relevant or wise. It allows the Bible to shape our thoughts on marriage, relationships, integrity, money, government, and charity. The key to this test: do you take all that the Bible says as normative for your life, or do you just take portions?

There is joy in letting God define and shape our identity, and our opinions. Let's help one another do exactly this.
